Halo Legends: "The Babysitter" Review

Halo Legends is a collection of Halo anime episodes due out in early 2010. Through the brand new Halo Waypoint feature on Xbox Live, we are given a sneak preview at the episodes that will be a part of the Halo Legends collection. "The Babysitter" is the first episode of the series and it has about everything that you would expect in the first episode of any program except a back story. You have a Spartan, a Spike Spiegel lookalike with a piss-poor attitude, and a few other Helljumpers who are tagging along (honestly, they were almost entirely useless and only took up about 3 minutes of screen time out of an 18 minute episode). I'd rather not spoil anything for those who have not yet watched the episode, so I will be as vague in the rest of my descriptions as I possibly can. "The Babysitter" gave me nothing to cling onto. I don't feel emotionally invested in any of the characters, in fact - one acts like those 12 year old kids who scream all match when I actually play Halo online.

I feel like there was no character introduction at all actually - we are shown 4 Helljumpers, they are looked up to by normal soldiers, they get a mission, the whiny character doesn't get his way, so he whines about it. There is a huge announcement that takes place in a random split-second and then there are several seconds of nothing but staring into space. The mission starts, some stuff happens, the mission is complete. There is a part that could be sad if I actually cared about the character at all, and finally, there is some more staring into space. Fade to black...no really, that's it.

I've watched a LOT of anime before this, and I have a fair amount sitting on my shelves at home - I'm just saying, I love anime, but I don't love this at all. I tried to make myself like this episode for a variety of reasons, but I never saw any valuable content that would make me want to keep watching. This oversaturation of Halo is going the kill the franchise for everyone soon if it hasn't already.

There you go - that's how I feel about "The Babysitter" - I'll post another review when the next episode is up on Halo Waypoint as well.
